What sort of art do you
show?
As a contemporary art gallery, the John Hansard Gallery’s
exhibitions typically feature painting, photography,
sculpture, film, video, installation and e-media produced
by younger and more established British and international
artists.
Do you
show student, staff or community work?
In line with the Gallery’s mission and exhibitions policy,
the John Hansard Gallery’s programme features the work
of younger and established British and international artists.
The majority of exhibitions are initiated and organised by the
John Hansard Gallery or in association with other galleries,
organisations and curators at home and abroad. A few of the
exhibitions staged are touring shows initiated by other venues
and all exhibitions are programmed by the Director and Exhibitions
Officer up to two years in advance. This means the routine
showing of student, staff or community work is rare.
However, exhibiting artists - such as Jakob Jakobsen and Ella
Gibbs whose work formed part of the John Hansard Gallery 2002
exhibition Potential:
ongoing archive - occasionally involve local community groups
in the creation of their works. In addition to this, the Gallery’s
education and events programmes create the opportunity and space
for visitors to create and share their art work with other workshop
participants.
How can
I exhibit at the John Hansard Gallery?
If you feel that your work is positioned to help fulfil the
Gallery’s mission and is in keeping with its exhibitions
policy, you should submit your exhibition proposal,
portfolio and curriculum vitae for consideration by the curatorial
team. This should be sent marked for the attention
of the Director, s.foster@hansardgallery.org.uk.
You should also include a stamped addressed envelope for the
return of your portfolio. If you require your portfolio to be
returned by a particular date, please specify this in your covering
letter.
Your proposal should identify and provide a rationale
for the exhibition concept or theme, the works and
artists you would like to include and your project funding application
and exhibition publication plans.
Given that the programme is developed so far in advance, you
should allow the curatorial team several months
to consider your proposal. If your proposal has been successful,
the Curatorial team will contact you directly.
How do I gain work
experience at the Gallery?
Whilst the John Hansard Gallery is not always able to offer
routine voluntary work, it does welcome the support
of volunteers, particularly during educational events,
the change over of exhibitions and mailshots. If you are interested
in participating in these sort of activities, please submit
your curriculum vitae and a covering letter to the
John Hansard Gallery, University of Southampton, Highfield,
Southampton, SO17 1BJ marked for the attention of Nikki
Arnold, n.arnold@hansardgallery.org.uk.
Alternatively, you may make your submission via email to info@hansardgallery.org.uk
. The organisation will hold your details on file and contact
you in the event of voluntary opportunities becoming available.
As the founding member of the Gallery GO consortium, subject
to funding, the John Hansard Gallery plans to recruit for the
position of Gallery GO Co-ordinator in the new year. If you
