Part of the University of Southampton, the John Hansard Gallery is a public contemporary art gallery.
Proud of its academic situation, the Gallery plays a strong role in the cultural life of Southampton, drawing a wide national audience to its vigorous programme of exhibitions and events.
The Gallery’s highly regarded exhibitions of work by a diverse range of artists from Britain and abroad, regularly tour the international circuit.
Since 1979, the Gallery has continued to develop as a centre of excellence whose programme brings contemporary debate to the public arena.

Location
The Gallery is situated on the west side of the University of Southampton Highfield Campus, next to the Turner Sims Concert Hall and student Health Centre.
Access by car from Salisbury Road, directly located off the main University Road.

Parking accessible to disabled visitors is available in designated bays at the rear of the building directly opposite Building 54 (Mathematics Department).
A gently sloping path leads visitors from these spaces alongside the Gallery towards the front entrance.
Non-disabled visitor parking subject to University campus restrictions. Parking permits available from the Gallery. Telephone for details.
Public Transport
From Southampton Parkway Station, take the U1 Uni-Link bus which stops at the Highfield Interchange / University Road.
From Southampton Central Station (south side), take the U1 Uni-Link bus to Highfield Interchange beside the Nuffield Theatre.

The Gallery Building
The Gallery is a single storey building with ramped access at the front entrance.
The Gallery has a reception desk near the front entrance.
FREE tea, coffee and water, available in the Gallery Reading Room area.
Seating is located throughout the Gallery building.

Accessible toilets for wheelchair users, near the Project Room.
Access
The John Hansard Gallery has a working Access Policy and is committed to providing an accessible and welcoming environment for all.
All staff are disability / access aware.

Guide dogs and hearing dogs for the Deaf, are admitted. Please ask at reception desk if your dog requires a bowl of water.
Orientation Tours are available on a one to one basis for all visitors. Contact the Access Officer for more details or ask at Reception.
Description / Touch Tours are available for all visitors. Maximum of four participants per tour. Booking essential by contacting the Gallery Access Officer.
BSL Signed Events
Regular signed talks and tours are available upon request Contact the Gallery Access Officer for more details.
Language Interpreted Events provided for international, non-English speaking visitors.
To arrange an interpreted tour, contact the Access Officer by letter or email, which will be interpreted in the Gallery.
Group Visits / Workshops
Exhibition tours, discussions, activities and workshops can be tailored to suit independent groups.
Organisations, clubs, societies, educational groups, families and children are especially welcome. Offsite, community visits are also available upon request.

Accessible Format Information
As well as language interpreted information, we provide information in a range of accessible formats including large print, Braille and on audio cassette / description.
Printed large format information is readily available in the Gallery as standard. For other sources of alternative format information and or to receive printed information via email, contact the Access Officer.
