| Remembering
Tyrrell & Green
Do you have a memory - or a story to tell - about a suit,
hat, piece of jewellery, handbag or anything else bought
from Southampton’s Tyrrell & Green department
store, which closed in 2000? Could you attempt to describe
this piece in detail? Would you like this memory to inspire
the creation of a new art work?
Southampton-based arts organisations John Hansard
Gallery and City Eye are working
with artist Jennifer Anyan on a project
which will do just that. The sculptural pieces will form
the heart of a unique John Hansard Gallery exhibition
in 2011.
Jennifer says ‘Treasured pieces of clothing
and accessories often bought for special occasions help
to form our identities. Memories of the pieces that we
no longer own are intertwined with the experiences we
had wearing them. I am interested in memories of anything
that was worn and will use some of these as a starting
point to make new art work which will celebrate Tyrrell
and Green in its heyday’.
How do I get involved?
If you would like to share a memory of an item which
came from Tyrrell and Green please contact City
Eye on 023 8067 7167 or email admin@city-eye.co.uk
with your contact details, a brief description of your
memorable item and why it is important to you. Possible
participants will then be invited to take part in a recording
session with Jennifer early in July.

Who are we?
John Hansard Gallery
brings world-class contemporary art to Southampton.
Based on the University of Southampton’s Highfield
campus, we showcase today’s most innovative artists,
alongside a rich programme of talks, seminars and children’s
activities, plus community initiatives and off-site projects.
Everyone is welcome and admission free. John Hansard Gallery
is part of the University of Southampton and financially
supported by Arts Council England.
City Eye
exists to inspire and support the development of film
culture in Southampton and across Hampshire and Isle of
Wight. For almost 25 years it has achieved this through
its participatory projects, educational work with schools
and colleges, community based film production, support
of local filmmaking talent, a programme of courses and
workshops to support skills development and its screening
of films.
Art at the Heart
This project is part
of Art at the Heart, a programme of inspirational
creative events and activities for Southampton’s
emerging cultural quarter. For most of the twentieth century
Tyrrell and Green occupied a key site on the edge of Southampton’s
Guildhall Square, which is currently being developed to
provide a stunning new space at the centre of the Cultural
Quarter. The store was a destination for the discerning
shopper and often supplied outfits and accessories for
those embarking on cruises from the port.
Art at the Heart
is led by Southampton City Council with
Art Asia, City Eye, John
Hansard Gallery and The Nuffield Theatre
and is supported by the National Lottery
through Arts Council England.
