2003
The John Hansard Gallery hosted a champagne and buffet reception
to mark the launch of a new body of work by Sunil Gupta, a key
figure in the story of black and Asian art, produced as part
of a three year AHRB Research Fellowship at the University of
Southampton. The event also marked the launch of Pictures
From Here, an Autograph
book published by Chris Boot published to coincide with a John
Hansard Gallery exhibition (27 May-26 July) showcasing this
new body of issue-based work.
During the spring of 2003, the Gallery hosted a buffet reception
for preview guests from the region and across the country to
celebrate the opening of
I Can't Make You Love Me, a solo
exhibition of new work by Paul Hamlyn award winner and adopted
British artist, Breda Beban.
2002
During 2002, the Gallery hosted a special dinner at the Olive
Tree Restaurant in Southampton to mark the opening of Michael
Snow’s first solo exhibition in the UK, almost
Cover to Cover. Michael, a Canadian artist engaging
in seminal work in experimental film, photography, painting,
installation and holography, was joined for dinner by many of
the staff and sponsors involved in staging his exhibition.
In celebration of the University’s Golden Jubilee,
the Gallery hosted a buffet reception to mark the start of the
second of its Art, Architecture and Community lecture
series, organised in association with Leo Stable and New
College, Southampton. The event united artists, architects,
councillors and University staff and preceded the first lecture
in the second series.
2001
To celebrate the opening of Gina
Pane’s first ever solo exhibition
in the UK the Gallery hosted a press view and
a special exhibition dinner at The Boom restaurant
in Southampton. Press guests included representatives of Art
Monthly, Contemporary Magazine, frieze and Sleaze
Nation. Dinner guests included those colleagues and
supporters involved in helping to mount this seminal exhibition.
A special event during the Gallery’s off-site exhibition
International Waters by Roger
Palmer, proved immensely popular in the spring of 2001.
It provided many of those in the city a link with the Union
Castle Shipping Line with the opportunity to see an exhibition
about the commercial links between Southampton and Cape Town.
The exhibition and event took place in the former offices of
Line which had been recently converted into flats.
Also in 2001, the Gallery staged an open day
to provide local residents and all those involved in mounting
Aspects/Positions, with an opportunity
to view the exhibition in each of the four venues (Aspects Gallery,
Portsmouth; City Art Gallery, Southampton; John Hansard Gallery,
Southampton; and the Millais Gallery, Southampton).
2000
During 2000, the Gallery hosted a lavish marquee reception
to celebrate the opening of British Art Show 5,
an event housed in three Southampton galleries simulataneously
— the City Art Gallery, the John Hansard Gallery and the
Millais Gallery. The event culminated in a party here at the
John Hansard Gallery.
