Arts Awards Success

In December 2008 seven young people from Southampton and Portsmouth attained their Bronze Arts Award, a nationally-recognised qualification. This was the culmination of work completed since September in partnership with Wessex Youth Offending Team, Southampton Intensive Supervision and Surveillance Programme and John Hansard Gallery. Thanks to the national enquire programme, participants were able to work alongside professional artists in the city.

John Hansard Gallery and Wessex Youth Offending Team will work together on the Arts Award course in 2009.

More about the Arts Award
The John Hansard Gallery has three trained members of staff to advise and support young people taking the Arts Award up to Gold level. The Arts Award is a nationally recognised qualification which supports young people to develop as artists and arts leaders. The award is available throughout England at three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold, and the Gallery can now support Arts Award participants at all levels of the scheme. For further details about how to participate in the Arts Award at the John Hansard Gallery, contact Ronda Gowland, Head of Education on 023 8059 2160 or email: rjg3@soton.ac.uk

Visual Roots

Since October 2008 we have welcomed two volunteers as part of the Visual Roots programme, a national initiative supporting placements in visual arts venues for vulnerable and hard to reach young people. Our volunteers, Carl and Chloe, have been involved in a range of activities and are completing their Gold Arts Award.

Carl
“I feel privileged because of the number of art forms that have
opened up to me. I’m interested in looking for the truth and different perspectives, especially those that differ from mainstream media.”

Chloe
“The scheme is helping me with gaining a certificate which I can put on my CV to help me find a job. Here you can get to choose things for yourself, where in school it’s already chosen for you.”
