Director

The primary focus of the Director’s
activities is upon the development and management of the
Gallery’s artistic direction and
of the staff employed to support this vision.

Stephen Foster has been the Director
of the John Hansard Gallery since 1987. During that time
he has spearheaded the Gallery's development in terms
of its exhibitions, its contextual work through lectures,
seminars and conferences, and its partnerships with other
organisations.
He established the regional audience development partnership,
Gallery
GO and was a founder of VEKTOR,
a European archive research project. He has twice been
the Chairman of VAGA (Visual Arts
and Galleries' Association) 1996-1999 and 2001-2002 and
has developed partnerships with many international galleries
and museums. He is currently Chair of the Southampton
City Council’s Cultural Consortium, a body responsible
for developing the city’s cultural strategy. He
is also an active researcher with a substantial publication
record.

Director's
Assistant
post description
The Director's Assistant provides administrative
support both to the Director and the Gallery office, overseeing
correspondence and diary planning, maintaining filing,
financial and information systems, managing the Gallery
Assistant rota and overseeing gallery
hires. The Director's Assistant also supports the
Director with specific projects, undertaking research
and assisting with preparation of written / visual materials.

Eloise Rose is a practising artist
who graduated from the University of Portsmouth with a
BA Fine Art in 2003. She joined the John Hansard Gallery
in December 2007, with 4 years experience working in administration.

Head
of Exhibitions

The Head of Exhibitions is responsible
for the planning and implementation of the exhibitions
programme — from the conception of an exhibition
to its installation; from its transportation and touring
to the sourcing of project funds to deliver it. As such,
and as the main connection between artists, exhibition
venues and audiences, the job of Exhibitions Officer is
central to the organisation. It is a challenging and demanding
role dependent upon a sound knowledge of contemporary
art and a strong managerial, organisational and problem
solving ability.

Ros Carter has more than 10 years exhibitions
experience after joining the Gallery as a Trainee Exhibitions
Assistant in 1991 following the completion of a Fine Art
degree programme at Winchester School of Art. In line
with the subsequent expansion of the Gallery’s projects
and staffing, Ros’ role has increased to include
the management of all aspects of exhibition planning and
implementation. In addition to this, she is very much
involved in developing and organising the Gallery’s
frequent educational conference
and symposia
events. She also serves as a Visual Arts Advisor
for Arts Council
England South East.

Head
of Communications

The Head of Communications manages all
aspects of Gallery marketing and communications, working
closely with artists, gallery colleagues, University staff
and students and a wide range of external partners. Responsibilities
include co-ordinating publicity material, internal and
external communications, advertising, sponsorship proposals,
audience research and website development. All are deployed
to raise the profile of the John Hansard Gallery, enhance
access to its activities and nurture a positive relationship
with its visitors.

Adrian Hunt joined the team in 2005
with over three years experience at Southampton City Art
Gallery and a previous post at the Henry Moore Institute
in Leeds. Adrian graduated in BA Fine Art from the University
of Leeds in 2001.

of Education

The primary role of the Head of Education
is to co-ordinate the Gallery’s education events
and develop relationships with a number of local community
groups as well as school, college and university students.

Ronda Gowland read Art and
Design History at the Southampton Institute
and completed her MA in Arts Management
at the University of Portsmouth in 2004.
In 2006 she became the Head of Education
and has been working at the gallery since 2000. With an
established history of working with disabled people, Ronda
also acts as the Gallery’s Access representative
and is an accredited University of Southampton
Diversity Trainer.

Special
Projects Officer

The Special Projects Officer represents
the John Hansard Gallery on all aspects of the development
of Southampton’s new arts complex; an ambitious
project to build a superb new mixed arts facility in the
heart of the city, in partnership with Art Asia, City
Eye, the Nuffield theatre and Southampton City Council.
In preparation for the new arts complex opening in 2014,
the Special Projects Officer also works
on developing new audiences and raising the gallery’s
profile through its own off-site projects and through
collaborative projects with the new arts complex partnership.

Val Drayton graduated as a mature student
from Winchester School of Art in 2003, with a BA(Hons)
in Fine Art and an MA in Sculpture. She joined the John
Hansard Gallery in January 2008 after working at the Hampshire
Sculpture Trust for 3 years as Administrator and as Acting
Director. Previously, Val worked extensively in education
and community work within the creative industries.

Gallery
Technician

The role of Gallery Technician is a
challenging and varied one often involving the significant
modification of the Gallery space to accommodate art works
on an exhibition-by-exhibition basis. Working closely
with curators and exhibiting artists the Gallery Technician’s
responsibilities also include transporting and installing
existing works of art as well as working to help artists
realise their ideas within the gallery space itself.

Vic Anderson has designed sets for both
film and television and previously worked for Century
21, the company behind Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and
Joe 90 as one of the original crew in the 1960's and 70's.
For almost 20 years Vic worked for Winchester School of
Art as Technician to the Foundation department, playing
a vital role in helping students realise their work before
joining the John Hansard Gallery in 2006.

Press
Officer
post description
The Press Officer is responsible for
developing the Gallery’s profile in local, national
and international press and media. Through working closely
with artists and colleagues, effectively distributing
press information and establishing strong relationships
with a range of press contacts, the postholder can secure
press coverage, reviews and articles. This is crucial
in attracting more visitors, sustaining and enhancing
public and professional interest, and ensuring the gallery’s
identity is conveyed consistently.

Education
Officer
post description
The Education Officer is responsible
for developing the Gallery's programme of work with primary/
secondary schools and colleges, in addition to Young JHG
Art Club activities and children’s and adult workshops.

Gallery
Assistants
post description
Gallery Assistants are the main point
of contact for Gallery visitors. They are responsible
for welcoming visitors into the Gallery, overseeing bookshop
transactions and handling queries on a day-to-day basis.
They also support the Exhibitions & Marketing Departments,
staff gallery events and assist the Gallery Technician
during exhibition installation periods. Many of the existing
team at the Gallery have performed this role during the
course of their John Hansard Gallery career.

Nicola Anderson, masters graduate in
Fine Art at Winchester School of Art joined the Gallery
Team in January 2004. Nicola also manages the Gallery
Bookshop within her role and is a practising artist, based
at The Arches studios in Southampton.
Nicky is currently on maternity leave having recently
celebrated the birth of her daughter! Congratulations
Nicky.

Lizzie Jones joined
the team in May 2007, having first worked for the Gallery
as an invigilator for the KUBA exhibition
in Southampton city centre. She is also a practising artist
based at the Arches studio Southampton. Lizzie graduated
from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff in 1996.
