John Hansard Gallery hosts University of Southampton Community Fellowship Grant Awards Presentation

The John Hansard Gallery was proud to host the University of Southampton Community Fellowship Grant Awards on Wednesday 22 February.

Grants totalling £12,000 were awarded to volunteering projects that forge closer links between the University of Southampton and the local community.

Award winners were joined by special guests at the event: Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Caroline Thomas, Alan Whitehead MP and Councillor Edwina Cooke, the Right Worshipful Mayor of Southampton.

The John Hansard Gallery not only hosted the awards but also received a grant for its First Impressions project. The grant will enable the gallery to work in partnership with Swaythling Youth Centre on this exciting project for young people aged 13 and above, during the summer half term (29th May – 2nd June 2006). Led by artist Kate Grenyer, the project will focus on identity and the way in which society judges people through appearance. The project will culminate in an exhibition of sketches that will be on display in the gallery Education Room to celebrate International Youth Day on the 12th August, 2006.

Ronda Gowland, Access Officer at the gallery says of the awards ‘they are invaluable. The grants enable the John Hansard Gallery to work with University volunteers and make a proactive contribution to the local community.’

The John Hansard Gallery will also be involved in a new scheme to improve the environment around the Violet Road area in Swaythling. A ‘cut way’ that is regularly used by school children and students will be cleared and a mural, designed and painted by pupils from Cantell School, will be placed on the fence panels. The project has already been highly praised by Home Office Minister Paul Goggins MP. Community Safety will receive the Community Fellowship Grant that will fund the scheme.
